CANON CASE STUDY: KLAS-TV Didn’t Gamble When it Came to Quality HDTV Images

The Challenge: Las Vegas CBS affiliate KLAS-TV’s created a new HDTV set that required lenses designed for the highest optical performance in low-light settings.

The Solution: Canon’s HDTV DIGISUPER 25xs lens with Power Optical and X-Element technology enhances the amount of light captured due to the high transmittance of this lens while its exceptional MTF performance also delivers extremely sharp images.

Las Vegas is known as a town where people takes risks, win big and lose big. So, it may not come as a surprise that the premier local TV news station KLAS, a CBS affiliate, didn’t gamble when it came to choosing the right broadcast lenses for their new studio.

KLAS recently built a state of the art newsroom with multiple rear projection screens and low light levels in order to achieve a desired unique look for their newscast. To highlight the sharpness of this new studio, KLAS needed a lens that could transmit stunning imagery in a low light level broadcast environment.

KLAS chose the DIGISUPER 25xs HD lens (XJ25x6.8BIE-D) because of Canon’s unique Power Optical System and X-Element design. This proprietary design achieves higher transmittance, contrast and optimized spectral response specifications, thus providing the best possible pictures even when used in low light settings. The KLAS production team was amazed at the quality of the images that the Canon lenses were able to capture of its news anchor and the captivating screen directly behind him.

"There’s not a lot of light on our new set, and the use of rear screen projection systems exacerbates that," explained Doug Kramer, Chief Engineer at KLAS-TV. “We needed a lens that would work well in low-light situations and still give us a little wiggle room. We got that with the Canon lenses: they accommodate the projection system and work with the ambient light to really make the image pop.”

Unique Depth of Field Challenges:

In addition, KLAS needed a specific depth of field so that images projected on the screens in the background were as sharp as images of the anchor in the foreground. The high transmission of light provided by the DIGISUPER 25xs lens allowed the lens to be stopped down in a manner that facilitated the requisite depth of field challenge.

"You can have the best of everything, but if the lens is lacking, you’re in trouble," stated Doug Kramer. “Canon designed the DIGISUPER 25xs lens perfectly, and it gives us crisp imagery that makes people really want to watch our newscast, day in and day out.”

Canon’s long history of innovation and dependability helped make the HDTV DIGISUPER 25xs lens the clear choice for KLAS. The DIGISUPER 25xs lens is Canon’s premier lens within the newly expanded line of HD studio lenses, which also include the XJ23x7BIE-D and the revolutionary XJ22x7.3BIE-D “Compact” Studio lens (designed specifically for portable HD and SD cameras).

"The Canon name has an excellent reputation, and these lenses help us deliver the best possible broadcast," said Kramer. “In Las Vegas, we’re fighting for every rating point and we can’t afford to gamble when it comes delivering high quality images.”
