CANON U.S.A. PRESENTS THE U.S. DEBUT OF A MULTI-PURPOSE PORTABLE HD ZOOM LENS FOR DAYLIGHT AND
NIGHTTIME INFRARED USE AT THE 2009 NAB SHOW

Day/Night DJ40x14B Lens Can Image Subjects in Total Darkness and Includes
Canon Image Stabilization and Back-Focus Shift Correction to Maintain Precise Focus

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., April 20, 2009 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, is proud to announce the U.S. debut of the Day/Night DJ40x14B lens, which features the capability of imaging subjects in total darkness when illuminated by near-infrared (IR) light. The third member of Canon’s long-zoom portable lens family, the Day/Night DJ40x14B lens, makes its U.S. introduction at the Canon booth (#C4325) at the 2009 NAB Show in Las Vegas, April 20-23 in the Central Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center. This lens is designed to work with the many day/night video cameras available from professional camera manufacturers, and offers a broad range of uses, from wildlife videography to homeland security applications.

“Canon research and development is continually advancing the frontiers of leading-edge optics and imaging,” commented Larry Thorpe, national marketing executive, Broadcast and Communications division, Canon U.S.A. “Canon’s Day/Night DJ40x14B HD zoom lens retains the same built-in Optical Shift Image Stabilizer system for which the HJ40 lens family is well-known. The stabilization on/off control and extender functions are also motorized for remote controllability. The combination of a very long focal length, optical image stabilization, and IR imaging has produced an important lens that offers innovative imaging flexibility for addressing multiple applications.”

Wildlife HD cinematographers and other camera operators doing a wide range of outdoor shooting over long distances have been greatly empowered in recent years by the introduction of the HJ40x14B and HJ40x10B long-zoom portable HD lenses from Canon. Now, that Canon technology has been applied to the Day/Night DJ40x14B HD zoom lens, which includes special optical coatings that extend the spectral transmittance of the lens into the near-IR region. Over 60 percent transmittance is achieved at 900nm wavelength. This is significant because long-zoom lenses typically exhibit an unavoidable focal-plane shift due to the difference in light wavelengths when day/night video camera filters are switched from shooting in daylight to shooting in nighttime IR environments. The Canon Day/Night DJ40x14B HD zoom lens incorporates Canon’s proprietary “back-focus shift correction and control mechanism,” which synchronizes the lens’ back-focus position-correction relative to the camera when the camera is switched between day and night modes. This automatically maintains a sharp focus under all shooting conditions.
